Uncharted 2 Beta Has Been Updated

For some lucky people, and I'm one of them. I have little news about the multiplayer beta of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. There is a persistent bug that your PlayStation 3 suddenly restart when the beta closes. Naughty Dog is already aware and will fix this very soon. The matchmaking problem will be solved too.

The Limits of both the Deathmatch and Plunder games, has been increased. The kill limit Deathmatch has gone from 25 to 50 and looting limit of 3 to 5 gone. This extends the game naturally, making it more enjoyable.

I'll keep my readers upto date with any tweaks the Uncharted 2 beta may get over the next couple of weeks, the time the beta runs. Overall Uncharted 2 is shaping up to be another solid game.

E3 2009: EyePet Preview

Virtual pets have been tried time and time again. From Tamagotchi to Pokemon, these imaginary creatures have been amusing some and inspiring thoughts of torture in others for over a decade now. Be that as it may, the concept of Eyepet is nothing new, but the way that it is presented is. Using the Eyetoy camera and a paper thin object known as the magic card, Eyepet lets you interact with these furry critters in every way imaginable, offering all new dimensions of functionality to these cute little varmints.

The goal of Eyepet is to bring the virtual pet into your living room and make them just as interactive as an actual pet. You start by aiming your Eyetoy towards a surface, placing the included magic card down within the camera's view and tapping that area to bring your pet to life. The demo that we witnessed had him jaunting forward from the middle of the card and beginning to prance around. The creature looked like an amalgamation of a monkey, dog, and cat, happily running to and fro within the camera's view. The woman sitting behind the table began to wave her arms near the pet, and he reacted to them realistically. When she swiped her hand across the surface, the pet leaped to avoid getting smacked. When she waved her arms over the table, the critter jumped upward attempting to nip at her fingertips while waving his tail incessantly. When she waved her arm over the pet's back, the little guy smiled and purred like any regular household pet would. This level of interactivity is astonishing, and there was plenty more to be revealed.

Placing the magic card on the floor and tapping it brings up the toy menu, which is full of fun activities to entertain both you and your pet. One of these is a bubble machine that sends a ton of bubbles flying in your pets direction when you press the button on top of it. Your pet will be overjoyed at this development, jumping at the bubbles and smiling when one pops. The developer then created a trampoline toy, which has the magic card appearing as a trampoline that your buddy can bounce on. You have to move the card underneath the bouncing pet so that he doesn't land on his rump, which the developer promised would be one of many available toys for both of you to enjoy.

The Eyepet needs nurturing just like any other animal, so you have to pay attention to their face to see how they are feeling. The creatures are very expressive, as it was visibly upset when the developer removed the trampoline from the screen. You can turn the magic card into an X-Ray, which shows you the innards of your critter as you wave it in front of him. This presents you what the creature is feeling, be it happy, sad, hungry, weak, or dirty. We were also shown the customization options, which allows you to change the fur color, fur length, skin pattern, clothing, and almost anything else. This insures that every single pet can be completely unique. I officially call dibs on the turtle costume, as it makes the little dude look totally rad.

There are over 250 outfits and toys available within the game, and they are unlocked by completing various challenges. You will be given new toys every day, giving you reason to check in with your pet as much as possible. If you get tired of the preset toys, it was revealed that you will be able to create new ones in a unique way. Using an ordinary piece of paper, you can draw an object and your creature can bring it to life for you. The example that was shown was an airplane, which was scanned in by holding the paper near the Eyetoy and recreated in-game by the pet. A 3D plane then popped out of the pet's notepad, which he was able to hop on and ride up into the sky. This drawing feature was very impressive, but I am afraid to think of what more deviant minds will create. After flying through the clouds for a bit, a minigame launched that had the pet popping a certain number of balloons within a time limit. This is just one of what the developer promised would be dozens of available minigames to try.

From what I saw, Eyepet looked remarkably impressive, though the limitations of what they showed—like the drawing feature—were not discussed. Eyepet will be launching in October 2009 for Europe, but no US date has yet been determined.

E3 2009: Metal Gear Solid Coming To PS Store June 18th

Konami has announced that the original Metal Gear Solid will finally be heading to the PlayStation Store in America -- and pretty soon, too.

You'll be able to replay Solid Snake's original adventure on June 18 and, similar to previous high-profile PS1 releases, will cost $9.99.

As for Europe? No word, yet.

E3 2009: Sony's Koller Talks Motion Control Rivalry, Core Vs Casual

When assessing the head to head between Microsoft and Sony's E3 briefings this year, there may be something of a role reversal visible.

Whereas Sony once stressed the PlayStation 3's potential as a multimedia device, this year it gave a very software-focused, core-targeted presentation, while it was Microsoft talking more about the "future of home entertainment" than it has in years past.

Even some analysts seemed to think that Sony's gesture recognition scheme debut was more 'gamer-oriented,' while director Stephen Spielberg's comments about accessibility and broader audiences led attendees and industry-watchers to peg Microsoft's Project Natal as having more relevant implications for wider or more casual audiences.

But Sony director of hardware marketing John Koller says that although capturing the core audience is certainly a goal, there was no deliberate attempt to refocus on prioritizing that market, and that Sony, too, remains interested in being "expansionary".

"Most of the games you saw... there are certainly others we didn't get into, some things the Xbox 360 got into -- for example, Rock Band: Beatles is coming to PS3 as well,".

"We didn't want to wave the defensive flag for every single game".

When it comes to those motion control solutions, Koller says Sony is "intimately familiar" with Microsoft's approach and how its own differs.

"Microsoft's is impressive because it does a full-body scan," he says. But he claims Project Natal has "depth issues on the Z axis" that Sony's PlayStation Eye-tracked solution avoids. "The PlayStation Eye is more accurate and more precise," he adds.

Taking a wider-lens view of both solutions, the largest question becomes whether or not it is preferable for the player to have an object in hand. At its briefing, Microsoft said controllers and their buttons were the last barrier between video games and "everyone else".

Sony counters that argument with the assertion that there are some gameplay experiences that require an object in hand or a button to push. "It's not necessary for every genre," says Koller. "But without it, you can't play every genre".

"Microsoft's [solution] is going to have issues with shooting games, for example," he suggests. "We want to be as diverse as we can; the controller that we're looking at will be open as possible".

With both technology concepts in such early stages, there are few definitive conclusions to draw about the merits of one approach versus the other. Analysts suggest the concepts are different enough that, alongside a lengthening lifecycle, it might drive opportunities for more individualized audiences for each console, as it could become more relevant for users to own both.

The first to market will also be a factor. "It's not going to be this calendar year," says Koller of Sony's plans. He suggests the company is currently working on having a strong lineup of software to support the peripheral at launch.

"Developers are looking at it now," he says. "The halfway answer is that there are a number of first-party and third-party games that will launch, and the idea is to have both franchise-type games [that are] very familiar, and to have new IP".

PSP Go pre-Orders Begin (US)

Pre-orders for the new PSP Go system have already begun. Just announced at E3 2009 this week, the new PlayStation Portable is available for pre-order now at $249.99.

Some of the main features of the PSP go include 16GB internal flash memory, WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0, 3.8 inch screen (16:9 format), 5.56 oz weight, USB 2.0, Memory Stick Micro (M2), Analog Video Out, built-in speakers and microphone. An AC adaptor
, USB cable and CD-ROM with Media Go ver.1.1 is also included.

Nice!

Rumour: PSP Go! Priced For The UK - £229.99 (Not £179.99)

We were slightly miffed when Sony announced the PSP Go! the other day. Not because of any great disappointment at the hardware - we knew all about that prior to the official announcement. Rather, we were annoyed at the lack of a UK price for the unit.

We discovered that the US and European PSP Go! will retail at 250 Dollars and Euros respectively, and the fear was that the '250' policy would extend to Sterling, too.

Interestingly, a sneaky peek over at two of the largest video game retailers in the UK, Game and GameStation, shows that the PSP Go! can be preordered for the sum of £229.99. Earlier today, it was listed as £179.99, which would have made it the same price as the original PSP when it was released back in 2005.

So, educated punt? Or do they know something we don't?

E3 2009: We Could Release GT5 Now , Says Yamauchi

Gran Turismo's dad Kazunori Yamauchi has told Eurogamer that Gran Turismo 5 is "at a point we can release it any time we want".

"I want to release it as fast as I can," Yamauchi told us, "but GT5 for us, when you talk about its status, it's at a point we can release it any time we want, but we can always keep working on it. It's very important for us to make sure everything is done perfectly and everything is done in detail."

Yamauchi also discussed possible connectivity between Gran Turismo PSP - due out with the PSPgo on 1st October - and GT5. "We're hoping maybe to make it so you can share the garage with the PSP version so that cars you unlock on PSP will be available immediately on GT5," he said.

Elsewhere, Yamauchi said the PSP version would hopefully be about a gigabyte in size when it's released for digital download, but it's unlikely to receive any downloadable content afterwards.

E3 2009: HOME Gets Picture Frames Feature

The highly touted promise of picture frames in Home has finally come to fruition, but at a price...

Yes, you can now display pictures from your PS3 HDD, in the form of picture frames, in your personal spaces in Home.

The only downside is that there are no starter frames whatsoever, so you must drop $2.99 for the initially released frame in the Home Mall.

Here are a few limits to consider as well, regarding the amount of frames which can be used in each personal space:

Harbor Studio - 4 Frames Max
Summer House - 2 Frames Max (Why? I have no idea.)
Lakeside Cabin - 6 Frames Max
Chamber Apartment - 12 Frames Max
Loot StageSet - 0 (!?)

Also, for some odd reason, this feature was not implemented into the club system, at least not yet, so you're confined to only using them in your personal spaces. Guess that club logo will have to lay low for awhile, eh?.

Overall it's good to see this feature finally hit Home, but c'mon Sony, you could have at least gotten us started with a freebie frame or something because $2.99 is a steep price to pay for a static image that few people will probably end up seeing.

E3 2009: Sony Hits Many Highlights At E3 (Recap)

Sony took the stage Tuesday during E3 to announce a laundry list of games. Some of the most impressive were on the PSP and the recently announced PSP Go! There are several exclusives, new IPs, and the suddenly popular motion control. Also know that the Uncharted 2: Among Thieves beta started 2nd june, at midnight. Let me just say that God of War III looks sick.

Take a look at the recap.

PSP/PSP Go!
Sony focused a chunk of its presentation on the PSP brand. The PSP Go! was leaked over the weekend. But not many details were known. Sony announced during E3 that the new PSP model will be available Oct. 1 for $249.

It will have the same operating system as the PSP-300, built-in WiFi, and Bluetooth. It will be 50 percent smaller and 40 percent lighter than the original PSP. Though it will only use downloaded content, Sony promises it won't replace UMD.

The PSP-300 will continue to get support, Sony said. Both versions of the handheld will have access to the upgraded Playstation Store, which will allow direct downloads to the PSPs.

After going though the PSP hardware, Sony announced a string of new portable games.

Grand Turismo - Oct. 1- It will feature 800 cars and 35 tracks with 60 different layouts.
- Users will be able to share vehicles with friends.
- It will have an Ad-Hoc mode where four people can race together.
- There will be several single-player modes, including the license skills tests.
- It will run at 60fps.

Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker - 2010
- Hideo Kojima said this is the sequel to Metal Gear 3.
- It takes place in the 1970s, 10 years after MGS3.
- Kojima is writing the script.

Sony then showed a montage video of the other games coming for the PSPs. Included was Resident Evil, Fat Princess, Jak & Daxter and PixelJunk Monsters.

PS3

God of War 3 - March 2010
The demo included the first few minutes of the game. It featured a mix of small cutscenes and typical God of War gameplay. The game is going to be very violent.

Final Fantasy XIII, XIV
So we all know about Final Fantasy XIII and its migration to the XBOX 360. Well, Sony announced today that Final Fantasy XIV: Online will come exclusive to the PS3. Both games will come in the Fall.

Agent
The rumors of a Rockstar exclusive are confirmed. Only a few details were given and no trailer was shown. But the game will be set in the 1970s and will center around an assassin.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
The demo showed a new level with very intense gameplay. The game still looks like a Game of the Year contender.

MAG - This Fall
Zipper Interactive did a very cool demo of the game. It had 256 live players and really showed what this game will be about. Players were split into eight player platoons and carried about small objectives as part of the bigger battle. Respawn points were dynamic and changed as the platoon advanced. Nothing about a price was given. Nor did they talk about what type of game modes there would be. They also didn't talk about how the communication system would work.

ModNation Racers
This is going to be a new racing IP that the developers said would allow users to share content. Think Mario Kart mixed with Little Big Planet.

Last Guardian
I'm not going to lie. By this point of the press conference, I was working on the recap. All I got was that it's an exclusive game.

Motion Control
Last but not least, Sony showed us their version of motion control gaming. It was a prototype presentation, but it has great potential. The video will do it more justice than my words. But it uses a controller to play off of the Playstation Eye.

The kid playing it was able to do many things, including shooting an arrow into the head of some hobbit looking thing. He also grabbed virtual items, turned the screen into a first-person shooter, and created a makeshift strategy game.

All in all, PS3 users have loads of really cool stuff to look forward to in 2009/2010.

E3 2009: Metal Gear Solid: Rising Confirmed For PS3, 360 And PC

E3 2009: Persona 5 Coming To PS3

Fans of Atlus' Shin Megami Tensei Persona series have been anxiously awaiting a next-gen update to the cult favorite series. That wait might not be too much longer.

Today, Atlus told our E3 reporting team that Persona 5 "probably won't be on the PlayStation 2," and will likely be making the jump to the PlayStation 3 and/or Xbox 360. It's much too soon to talk about release schedules, but just the notion that the game is in development is good enough for me.

The PlayStation 2 versions of the series were highly enjoyable, and if Atlus gives the same love and attention to this next entry, you can be sure they'll have another critical darling on their hands. Be sure to check back later for more on Coop and Sarah's visit with the publisher.

E3 2009: PS Store Revised

While everyone has their eyes on Sony’s E3 conference, the EU and US PS Store’s have been given a little freshen up.

No major new features; however there is a darker shade of blue to the background and new borders to each segment (e.g. Latest, PS3 Games etc). The load times of the content is swifter and there is a new noise when scrolling through the products available.

Overall, it looks fresher and is an improvement over the older style, but this is not a massive change by any means. We will let you know if there are any improvements other than purely cosmetic as soon as we find anything.

Crytek Announces Crysis 2 For Consoles And PC

Today EA and Crytek announced Crysis 2 for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC.

The next instalment of Crysis will be the first game built on Crytek's CryENGINE 3 and will be released for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. EA will publish the game.

"The development of Crysis 2 marks a major stepping stone for our studio," said Cevat Yerli, CEO of Crytek, who had hinted at a multiplatform console game in April.

"This is not only the next game in the Crysis franchise, it’s the first title we are developing for consoles and the first title being built on CryENGINE 3. We are excited to have the support of EA Partners again as we work together to make the launch of Crysis 2 a huge event."

Following the announcement of CryENGINE 3 for consoles, it was inevitable that Crytek's next game would be for multiple platforms, but it wasn't obvious that it would be Crysis 2.

"Nothing speaks more to the success of the EA Partners program than when a studio the calibre of Crytek continues to work with us," said David DeMartini, Senior Vice President and General Manager of EA Partners.

"Crytek is already one of the elite PC development studios in the world and we are excited to have the opportunity to partner with them in bringing their award-winning technology and gameplay to more platforms and a wider audience with Crysis 2."

As soon as we hear more about Crysis 2 we'll let you know.
