Gamescom 2010: Mass Effect 2 PS3 Bonus Content Detailed
Bioware has detailed some of the 'hours of bonus content' that PS3 Mass Effect 2 players can look forward to.
The PS3 version will include pre-game content to serve as an introduction to the Mass Effect universe and story for new players - as well as DLC from the 360 game on-disc.
And that's not all - there will also be PS3-customised access to the Cerberus Network, although details on that one are sketchier.

UK Ad Watchdog Criticises 360 Advert For Using PS3 Footage In Promotion
The Advertisting Standards Authority this week upheld a viewer's complaint as it found Square-Enix guilty of misleading gamers by using images from the PlayStation 3 version of Final Fantasy XIII in an advert for the 360 version.
The investigation came as one single viewer complained that a sequence of images was from the supposedly superior PS3 version. ASA officials were sent both consoles and games and determined that PS3 screen quality to be sharper than the Xbox version and ordered the offending advert to be removed from circulation.
A spokesman for the ASA said the viewer's objections had been upheld, adding: "The ASA noted that the viewer, who saw the ad in HD, was concerned that the images from the PS3 version of the game were sharper than those on the 360".
"We tested the two games, on screens with an identical set up, and ran them alongside one another".
"We noted that there was a discernible difference in the picture quality of the two - the PS3 image in video sequences appeared sharper and colours were more vivid than those of the 360".
"We considered that, because the ad promoted the game on the 360 platform, it should have featured footage derived from that console".
"Because it did not, and because we considered that the use of PS3 footage in the ad exaggerated the quality of the footage available on the XBOX 360, albeit marginally, we concluded the ad was misleading".
Square-Enix later confirmed that the advert actually contained no in-game footage and was instead mostly composed of full motion video. The difference in quality comes from the fact that due to 360 DVDs having a lower storage capacity than the PlayStation 3's Blu-Ray disks, the footage had to be compressed on the 360 version, thus slightly degrading the image quality.
The publisher added that there was 'no substantive difference' in the output of the game and that most people, even avid gamers wouldn't notice the difference.

Channel 4 In Talks With Sony Over 4oD For PS3
Channel 4 is in talks with Sony to bring video on demand service 4oD to the PlayStation 3 and is also developing an iPad app.
A report in Broadcast magazine reveals that talks are already ongoing, suggesting that they are still in the early stages.
Although the BBC iPlayer has already been a huge hit on the PS3 Channel 4's service would be the first commercial arrival.
Anonymous source
"We're looking to launch on the PS3," a 'source at the broadcaster' told Broadcast.
"4oD is becoming a platform agnostic product and will be successful because of the quality of the content".
4oD content can already be found on many platform, including Virgin Media's highly-rated on demand service and YouTube – which screens full-length shows from Channel 4.
The Xbox is offering Sky Player (but not the iPlayer) and the PS3 would no doubt welcome the chance to bring another bit of value to the console.
There has also been suggestions that ITV is in talks with Sony over bringing the ITV Player to the PS3.

Sony: Kinect & EyeToy Both 'Limited'
Sony design guru Dr Richard Marks has claimed that both Microsoft's Kinect and Sony's own EyeToy are 'limited' in comparison to PlayStation MOVE.
Marks, who created the EyeToy, is convinced that gamers - and games designers - can achieve more with a controller in their hands.
Although he admitted EyeToy was "really neat" he said it faced limits on its own that the addition of MOVE has overcome - and suggested Kinect would suffer the same problems.
"I think it depends if you believe that controller-less is necessarily better which I don't believe," he told T3.
"I created the technology for EyeToy which we made a controller-less device and it was really neat and it enabled new things but it is not the end-all, be-all in control, we entered limits with that and I think without a controller you run into limits of what you can enable".
He added: "You can do things like track the whole body, you can have dancing and exercise but a lot of the core gameplay ideas that we want to see happen and want to enable just weren't possible with only a camera. We would have done that, we look at as much as we could do with just a camera but it wasn't the right choice we felt".
PlaySation MOVE will be released in the EU on September 15, the US on September 19 and Japan on September 25.

EA Sued By 6,000 Retired NFL Players
EA has had a lawsuit filed against it by approximately 6,000 retired NFL players, over the "unlawful" use of their likenesses in Madden NFL 09's historic teams.
The suit alleges that EA "knowingly and intentionally" used the retired players' likenesses in such a way to avoid having to pay licensing fees.
Former player Tony Davis claims that EA used the players' exact stats and positions from when they were active in the league, including height and weight, but removed their names and changed their uniform numbers to avoid licensing payments.
"The only significant detail that EA changes from the real-life retired NFL players is their jersey number," the lawsuit says.
"Despite EA's 'scrambling' of the retired NFL players' numbers, the games are designed so that consumers of the Madden NFL video game franchise will have no difficulty identifying who the 'historic' players are".
The lawsuit seeks punitive damages for "deprivation and violation of publicity rights".
When contacted, EA declined to comment on the litigation.

Uniloc Sues Sony, Activision Blizzard & Aspyr Over Copy Protection
Sony, Activision Blizzard are a handful of other publishers are being sued by Uniloc - a company that specialises in computer security and copy protection initiatives.
The qualm is based on the publishers allegedly infringing on Uniloc's patents for what is essentially digital rights management (DRM).
Ready for the legal mumbo-jumbo?
Uiloc claims that the defendants "directly and/or indirectly infringed at least one claim of the '216 patent" by "among other things, making, using, offering for sale, selling and/or importing a system, device and/or method for reducing software piracy, reducing casual copying and/or reducing the unauthorized use of software, including without limitation."
As a result this has "caused reparable and irreparable damage to Uniloc and Uniloc will continue to suffer damage for which remedies at law are inadequate unless each defendant is enjoined."
DRM has been a thorn in gamer's sides since the dawn of DRM, it's even splitting publishers and developers down the middle as to whether it does more harm than good to the industry.
Oddly BLizzard itself said that relying on DRM is 'a losing battle' in May, saying that great content was the best weapon against piracy.

So This Is What The Original PS3 Design Was Based On
So it appears the Playstation 3’s original design wasn’t based on the monolith from 2001: A Space Odyssey after all. This is the Parks Building in Osaka, Japan, and it appears awesomely similar to the “God of Consoles” version of the PS3.
We’re waiting on confirmation on whether or not the building does “everything” as we expect.
All kidding aside, the similarity from this angle is a pretty cool one (funny as well).

Sony: Sorry For Firmware 3.41 HDD Problems, Fix Now Live
Sony’s gone and confirmed that a new version of PlayStation 3 Firmware update 3.41 has been released, fixing a minor issue that some PS3 owners were having, related to replaced or swapped console hard drives.
While the version number of the firmware won’t change (your system will still read 3.41), the update does help out those users mentioned above.
From a post on the European PlayStation Blog:
"For those users who are replacing the PS3 hard disk drive: we are aware of the symptoms with the system software update 3.41, released on July 27, and that it will cause the update to stop in some occasions while replacing the PlayStation 3 (PS3) Hard Disk Drive (HDD) if the PS3 system is installed with version 3.41.
"If you are experiencing such symptoms when replacing the HDD of your PS3 system, we kindly ask you to use the latest data and try again. We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused, and appreciate your understanding and continued support".

EA Bright Lights Announce 'Create' For PlayStation 3 With MOVE Support
It had to happen at some point. In fact, we’re amazed it didn’t happen sooner. LittleBigPlanet was such a run-away success in 2008, another developer was always going to take the idea; seems like Guildford’s EA Bright Light are the first though. Interesting that it should be the team up the road from Media Molecule though, eh?
Create, actually sounds rather interesting though — even if it does have all the personality of a cardboard box. The game will encourage players to create "imaginative gameplay challenges where the solutions are fuelled by the creativity of the player".
"Create uses families’ imaginations to develop new ways to play together that are both fun and challenging," notes EA Play’s Harvey Elliott in the press release.
"We wanted to design a game where the entire family can explore, decorate, and solve challenges where no solution is wrong and the only limit is the imagination".
Interestingly, the PlayStation 3 version of the game will support the PlayStation MOVE controller. Chalk that up as another game that’s getting optional support for Sony’s motion controller.
We’re not really sure what to think of Create yet. It does sound like LittleBigPlanet, but the trailer gives the impression it’s more like a video game adaptation of the Honda advert.
Create is coming to a PS3, 360, Wii & PC this November.

UK Demon's Souls Practically Sold Out Nationwide
The Black Phantom Edition of Demon Soul's is practically sold out everywhere in the UK. That’s according to publishers Namco Bandai Partners, who are only aware of a few “dribs and drabs”.
“I can’t give you a number, but what I mean by an ‘amazing success’ is that all the stock we built of the Black Phantom Edition has sold out (apart from dribs and drabs),” Lee Kirton, marketing and PR manager for Namco Bandai Partners UK, told Eurogamer.
"For a game that’s been out a long time overseas we believe it to be a success. Reviews scores and coverage have been amazing.
"We haven’t done hundreds of thousands of units,” he added, “but we’ve been pleased".
The Black Phantom edition included an art-book, strategy guide and soundtrack. Namco Bandai Partners will release a standard edition of the game this week.
The success of Demon’s Souls never ceases to amaze us. We suspect Sony will want to make a much bigger deal out of the inevitable sequel, should it roll around any time soon.

Guerrila Games To Begin Work On New IP Afer Killzone 3
Guerrilla Games’ managing director, Herman Hulst, has confirmed in a magazine interview that the studio are beginning work on a new IP. Their priority is currently Killzone 3, but Hulst has revealed that the studio are currently at the concept stage for the new property.
It’s assumed that Guerrilla Games will ramp up development of the new IP once Killzone 3 is complete. No further details were given. You probably shouldn’t expect any until this time next year.

PlayStation Plus: Everything You Need To Know
The current PSN features will remain free. Sony are still very committed to PSN as a free gaming service and are certainly not planning on reducing this service following the launch of PlayStation Plus.
Plus is an evolving service and the features included at launch will be:
Here are the features in more detail –
Games & Special Offers: As a member you can expect to get your hands on at least 4 games a month at no extra charge. Each month there will be a selection of 1x PSN game, 2x minis and 1x PS One classics. A list of the games available in month 1 and 2 can be found below. You will be able to download these games during the month they are available, until the new selection replaces these.
Once downloaded, these games are yours to keep and play as long as you are a member of PlayStation Plus. If your subscription lapses and then you re-subscribe the games you have already downloaded will reactivate, so you still have access to them. Additionally, if you delete one of these titles from your PS3 but decide you want to get it back then you can re-download from the Plus section of the Store if the games is still there, or, if the game has expired from the Plus section of the Store, then you can simply search for it on the Store and download it again at no extra cost.
Each month there will be 2 dynamic themes, 2 premium avatars and premium game elements/add-ons for you to download and many of these will be exclusive to members only. These are yours to keep forever once you have downloaded them.
Plus members will also be given exclusive PlayStation Store discounts each month that are above and beyond the current Store discounts available to everyone. These discounts will range from 20% – 50% and anything you buy with these is yours to keep and enjoy forever.
Finally, wherever possible we’ll be making sure that members are included in some selected demos and beta trials early, before they go live to everyone, so you can be the one to tell all your mates about the next big game they ‘must’ get.
As I mentioned, just the games themes and avatars are worth over £200* a year and with unrestricted access to 48+ games each year and all the other features, we think this service is great value for money.
Full Game Trial: Each month we will be offering members the chance to download 2 full games, try them out for a period of time (1 hour unless otherwise stated). Then you will have the choice to either buy the game and carry on from where you left off, or delete the game from your hard drive. This is a unique way to trial the full game experience and means you don’t have to be restricted to certain levels/game modes when you test out a game.
The games in full game trail will become available to all Store users to purchase but only Plus members will have the chance to ‘try before you buy’.
The other great thing about this feature is that you can continue from where you were at the end of the trial period if you decide to buy the game. All game saves and trophies earned during the trial will be unlocked and will show up on your trophy list and your trophy level, when you purchase the game. You don’t even have to re-download the game, just purchase and go back to the XMB to access the game.
Automatic Download: Members will be able to set their PS3 to wake up from standby at any time of the day or night, download and install any game updates for the games you have been playing and we will also send you new game demos that will be ready and waiting for you to play when you next use your PS3. System software updates will also download automatically (manual install still required) and then the PS3 will turn itself off again.
Game updates and demos will also automatically install and the next time you turn on your PS3 you will see a brief on screen message letting you know what has been downloaded and updated.

PS3 Profitable, Price Cut Unlikely
In an interview with IGN, Shuhei Yoshida, president of Sony's Worldwide Studios, said the company is finally making money on every PS3 sold and there's no rush to bring the price down again.
"This year is the first time that we are able to cover the cost of the PlayStation 3," Yoshida said. "We aren't making huge money from hardware, but we aren't bleeding like we used to".
In May, Sony began shipping new PlayStation 3 consoles with smaller and more cost effective graphics chips. Now, Yoshida said, Sony is looking at replenishing retail stock that has been running on empty since January rather than cutting the price.
"When we bring the cost of hardware down, we are looking at opportunities to adjust prices if we believe that will increase demand," he explained. "At the moment, we are trying to catch up our production".
"We have lots of great games coming out and innovations with Move and 3DTV, so we don't believe this is the time for us to think about a price drop," he added.
Rather than cutting the price of the base model, Yoshida said the company may look at doing additional console bundles, like the one recently announced that will include Sports Champion, a PlayStation Move controller, and a PlayStation Eye for $399.

PS3 - Cross Game Chat Leaked?
Following the news of the launch of PlayStation Plus, the premium PSN service, eagle eyed visitors to some foreign language EU sites noticed mention of Cross-Game-Chat for subscribers.
The new service, launching later this month promises subscribers additional features as well as free exclusive content and discounts, but one of the most anticipated features was omitted from the announcement and inclusion on the UK and US PlayStationPlus sites.
However, visitors to the www.playstationplus.com, as directed by sony, led them to be redirected to a local page in their native language - except for one ominous point:
Cross-game Voice Chat: invite your friends to chat online no matter what game you’re all playing, even if they aren’t members of PlayStation Plus.
This seems to us like more than just a simple mistake, could this be a genuine slip-up or an early information leak? See the image below for yourself and make your own minds up.

Playstation MOVE Delivers A Lot More Precision Than Kinect Claims BBC
Rory-Cellan Jones of the BBC was recently lucky enough to go hands-on with the latest build of Move as well as Kinect. Inevitably he has drawn comparisons between the two and interestingly he claims that Move delivers a 'lot more precision' than Kinect but it is less physical.
Jones tested out a table tennis game with the Move and exclaimed it mimics the real thing much more closely than anything he's ever seen before.

Sony Investigating Factory Suicides
Chinese manufacturing giant Foxconn has been in the news for all the wrong reasons lately, a spate of suicides at its Shenzhen complex attracting worldwide media attention. It's also attracted the attention of Sony, for whom Foxconn manufacture consoles.
Like Nintendo, Sony has launched its own instigation into work practices at Foxconn's factories, issuing a statement which reads "In response to recent reports, Sony has begun taking steps to re-evaluate the working environment at Foxconn".
The Japanese company joins not only Nintendo but also Nokia, Apple, Dell and HP in probing Foxconn, whose time in the spotlight is serving as an untimely reminder to Western consumers that the electronic devices we demand at affordable prices often come with a human cost.
Foxconn stands accused of operating a "militarised" operation, with workers forced to stand, are banned from speaking and detained in factory dormitories.
